Dog Houses
Dog houses are a necessity for dogs spending a lot of time outdoors. Dog houses come in wood and plastic varieties and a number of sizes and styles to meet the needs of your favorite canine.
Benefits
Dog houses provide necessary shelter from sun, cold, and moisture. Slanted or
A-frame roofing and raised floors help keep your dog insulated
and dry. For optimal protection, put the dog house in a shady area during hot
seasons; during cold months, be sure that the door doesn’t face cold drafts.
Dog houses with off-center entrances help shelter the interior from winds. In
addition to shelter, dog houses provide a place to unwind and relax (we all
need our own space!). For comfortable joints and bones, include bedding
with a washable cover.
Wood houses
Wood does not conduct heat the way some other materials do. This is a big advantage in dog houses because they stay cool to the touch even in the hottest summer sun. Wood dog houses also offer the most variety of styles ranging from rugged to charming.
Plastic houses
Plastic dog houses are the low-maintenance solution to your busy life. Plastic
Igloo dog houses are easy to construct, and
just as easy to take down—cleaning is a snap. Plastic dog houses will
not splinter or peel and will never need refinishing.
The right size for your dog
To fit your dog correctly, a dog house’s size should be based on your dog’s height. The dog house should allow your dog to enter, comfortably turn and settle himself. But if the house is too large, it will be difficult to retain sufficient heat during cold weather. In general, extra small houses fit very small breeds, like Pomeranians or Chihuahuas. Small houses work for beagles or similarly small breeds. Dalmatians and other mid-sized dogs will be comfortable in a medium-sized dog house, while large dogs, such as sheepdogs and German Shepherds prefer large sizes. Finally, consider an extra-large dog house if you own a Great Dane or any other very large dog.
Your four-legged friend deserves an attractive, high-quality house to call his own. You’ll gain peace of mind knowing he’s comfortable and safely sheltered.
